Hiking and Walking

Adventure and active tourism is a growing part of the New Zealand tourist and holidaymaker scene and Mid-Canterbury offers plenty of alternatives.

With a mix of both flat plains and some of the most sensational and accessible mountain country in New Zealand, there are walks and hikes for everyone — from family groups who want an easy amble, to those who want a bit more of a challenge and finally, to those serious trampers looking for something totally immersing.

Please note our maps are currently under construction as we are working to build a comprehensive resource for you.

Personal locator beacons, owned by Methven Search and Rescue, can be hired through Hammer Hardware on the Main Street of Methven (Phone 03 302 9664) and are a must have item for people heading into the back country. These beacons (weighing only 250gms) once activated, will enable emergency services to pinpoint you to within 50 metres and organise your rescue. $10 per day, $20 a weekend, and $30 a week.

To ensure that walks and tracks are open or any additional safety warnings and information please visit the DOC's website or ring either the Ashburton iSITE 03 308 1050 or Methven iSITE 03 302 8955.
