Within easy walking distance of Ashburton shopping precinct is the Ashburton Domain with expansive lawns, trees, gardens and sports grounds. It’s a favourite picnic spot, surrounded by many specimen and exotic trees.

Just off SH1, Tinwald Domain is a large, open space with a children’s playground and a picturesque lake, enclosed by tall stately trees. Two large oaks at the lake entrance were planted by the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George V and Queen Mary) to mark their visit in 1901.

The district’s back country is its best kept secret - mountains, lakes, endangered birds, vast landscapes, rainforests, waterfalls and braided rivers. . . .

Hakatere Conservation Park covers 69,000 hectares of rugged mountain country. Tussocklands, beech forest and sparkling lakes spread between two mighty rivers, the Rakaia and Rangitata. Proposed for World Heritage listing, the Park offers many recreational opportunities. These include swimming, boating, tramping, climbing, skiing, hunting, mountain biking, horse riding and fishing. For more contemplative activities there are places to picnic and to camp. There are many areas where the natural history and biodiversity of the region can be appreciated, with interests such as bird watching and fossicking for some prime examples of the varied geology to be explored.

In addition to recreational pursuits, the pristine Canterbury lakes and beech forests offer important wildlife refuges for many species, including some endangered and rare examples. Guides are available for eco-tours, bird- watching and photography.

Trotts Garden

located in 371 Racecourse Road, Ashburton - Trott's Garden was planned from the beginning. The woodland area was developed around a series of gently curving walls. Later the water gardens were added and finally the English inspired formal gardens. The layout is such that the garden areas are integrated yet contain elements of surprise as the visitor...
