Mt Hutt Ski Area

Price from $98 (NZD)

There’s a mountain that rises out of the Canterbury Plains that the locals are proud to call their own and that everyone else reveres. It’s high and it’s wide and most days at the summit you can see from one side of the country to the other, from the jagged spine of the Southern Alps to the West, right across the patchwork of pastureland to the Pacific Ocean on the East.

Mt Hutt is Canterbury’s own “big mountain” with runs to accommodate families on a fun day in the snow as well as the variety it takes to entice die hard skiers and snowboarders from all over the world. Yet you can still sense the local pride. This is Canterbury’s ski area.

The Summit 6 seat high-speed chairlift whisks you up to the highest point of any ski area in the South Island. From your spot on top of the world, you make your choice: cruise down the super-wide grooming on ‘Broadway’ or take on the challenging off-piste chutes in “Towers”. When the day draws to a close, relax and unwind ‘country style’ in the quintessential kiwi town of Methven.

There’s simply nowhere else quite like it.

Just a 35 minute drive from Methven village, and 90mins from Christchurch International Airport, Mt Hutt is renowned for its regular and reliable snow, combined with extensive snowmaking, it consistently has one of the longest snow seasons in the South Island. With an altitude of 2086m and a skiable area of 365 hectares, it has one of the longest vertical drops too!

A new terrain park constructed high on the mountain in 2014 provides the ultimate snow-sure destination for freestyle skiers and riders, while the comprehensive rail and jump-line parks lower down remain hugely popular with both novice and intermediate jibbers alike.

First Tracks operates from 8am on Saturdays and Sundays (weather and conditions dependent) – ride the Summit Six and claim your first tracks! Feel the groomed corduroy slide under your feet or if you’re lucky enough to score a powder day, experience the magic of slashing your turns through fresh snow.

The Methven Kids 4 Free deal has been hugely successful and continues for 2017. Kids 4 Free means that every child 10 years and under receives free accommodation and meals in Methven, plus free lift passes every day at Mt Hutt when accompanied by a paying adult.

An easy and convenient rental service is available on-mountain which includes some of the latest skis, poles, snowboards, boots, clothing and helmets. For intermediate and expert riders a range of performance skis and snowboards are available – our rental experts help guests choose the best equipment for conditions.

Mt Hutt is scheduled to open on June 3 for the 2017 season.
