The many rivers, streams and lakes abound with trout and salmon - it’s an anglers paradise.
Arriving into the district from Christchurch you’ll cross the Rakaia River bridge, the longest in the Southern hemisphere. Upstream, experience a jet boat tour through the stunning Rakaia Gorge or hold tight on a Grade 5 white water raft ride on the Rangitata River. The Rakaia and the Rangitata are world famous for their fishing and jet-boating and are among the best examples of braided rivers in the world. - in fact, it was for exctly this type of river that the jet boat was invented.
Close to Ashburton town is the beautiful man- made Lake Hood, with a rowing course, water ski park, and residential area. While on the shore of Lake Hood you can enjoy lakefront dining. Lake Hood is a welcome addition to the other natural waterways in the regions — the braided rivers and mountain lakes, famous world-wide for the fishing and jet boating.
In addition to pleasurable boating, kayaking, swiming and fishing, the Canterbury lakes also provide important wildlife refuges for rare species such as the endangered Southern Crested Grebe.
